So sorry to hear of Mrs. Betty's passing. She was a lovely lady and did so much to help the community of South east Arkansas. I do remember many years ago when my mother Bonnie Engelkes Harrod was ill in Chicot Memorial that she was so sweet and kind. At the age of 8 years old I have a very fond memory of her caring and being so gentle with my not understanding how my mom was sick. She was so patient with me during that time.
May you all know she was a blessing to so many.

I was saddened to hear of Miss Betty's tragic passing. If everyone had half the enthusiasm and drive she had for the good, our world would be much better. Her death leaves a great void In Portland and the Mainline. May the Lord give her family comfort and strength now and in the days to come.

I am a member of the Gay family who lives in Cathedral City, California. I met Betty many years ago when she was married to my cousin James Gay, but I haven't seen her since that first meeting. My second cousin Helen Duprey told me of Betty's death, and I am very sad to hear about it. She was a fine person, tolerant, understanding, and loving. She will be missed.

She has enhanced Portland way of living for many years. When my mother passed away the same way as Mrs Betty back on 01-06-1982 by train wreck, Mrs Betty was there for me then. I met Mrs. Betty Gaye Schuler, about 6 years ago in 2009, as I delivered her newspapers through meeting her I was astonished and admired that a woman her age was still working, still walking, still enjoying her life. My heart is broken from the time I receive the news of her passing. I had just talked to her that morning. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE AND MISS YOU MRS. SCHULER.

July 5, 2015 3:37 PM

The city of Portland has lost a great citizen. Betty was able to turn 2 small clinics in Portland and Wilmot into Mainline Health Systems with 5 clinics in Ashley and Chicot Counties. She has helped to make the Portland Food Pantry a great success, making sure that needed items were there for the people depending on it. She loved her church and church family, and made a great Italian style salad for the fifth Sunday potlucks. She sucessfully wrote a Blue and You Grant that has provided $72,000 for a walking trail that is in the process of being built in Gus Pugh Park. She could not hear or understand the word "No". You could say it, but she would not blink an eye and continue telling you what she needed you to do. And you would go do it! . There is an old saying that if someone of importance dies, there will be a rain to wash their footprints away. It has been raining for 2 days, but it will take a lot of rain to wash away Betty's tracks. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family. She will be greatly missed......
