Shirley Murphy, 84, of West Monroe, Louisiana, died Friday, March 19, 2021, in Monroe. Mrs. Murphy was a native of Fountain Hill, a resident of West Monroe, Louisiana for the past 33 years, and a former resident of Hamburg for many years. Mrs. Murphy graduated in 1954 from Hamburg High School. She was a homemaker and worked at Sam’s Club in Monroe, Louisiana for a number of years. Mrs. Murphy was a member of First West Church in West Monroe, Louisiana, where she was a member of the Soul Seekers Life Group. She loved sewing, spending time with her family, taking care of her kids and grandchildren, and she enjoyed working crossword puzzles.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Faye Murphy Burns in 1979; two great-grandsons, Dakota Mason Martin and William Buck Murphy; her parents, Otis & Annie Pearl Knoblock Stanley; a sister, Jolene McGuffie; two brothers, Jerry Lee Stanley & Billy Mack Stanley and a daughter-in-law, Suzy Murphy.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold “Sugar” Murphy of West Monroe, Louisiana; three sons, Stanley H. “Butch” Murphy, Jerry “Buddy” Murphy and wife, Shirley, and James Dennis Murphy and wife, Cindy, all of Hamburg; two daughters, Rita King and husband, Jamie, of Columbia, Louisiana and Terra Matthews and husband, Rusty, of Farmerville, Louisiana; a sister, Joyce Desoto of Houston, Texas; a special friend, Paula Tidwell of West Monroe, Louisiana; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and a host of adopted children, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2021, in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Woods Watson and Rev. Phillip Bowles officiating. Burial will be in the Dailey Cemetery. Pallbearers are Johnny William Pierce, Robert Murphy, Jeremy Murphy, Matt Martin, Rusty Matthews, and Jamie Wooten. Honorary pallbearers are Ed Murphy, Doyle Murphy, and Jerry Murphy.
Following the state guidelines, everyone in attendance to the funeral service and visitation will be required to wear a mask.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
