Shelby Reid Harrod, Sr.

Shelby Reid Harrod, Sr., 95, of Hamburg, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at his residence. Shelby lived a long and meaningful life devoted to his faith, family, students, community, and the land he loved. He was born August 18, 1930 in the Eagle Lake Community of Bradley County, to Jimmie and Violet Morgan Harrod. Shelby was raised in a close-knit farming family alongside his brothers, sisters, and many cousins, where he developed the strong work ethic, humility, and values that would guide him throughout his life.

A 1948 graduate of Hermitage High School, he continued his education at Arkansas A&M College (now the University of Arkansas at Monticello), where he earned his degree in 1952. During his college years, he also proudly served in the Arkansas National Guard, demonstrating an early commitment to serving both his state and his country.

Shelby began his career in education in 1952 at Hermitage High School as a Physical Education Teacher and Basketball Coach. After two years, he accepted a coaching position in Tillar. It was there that he met the love of his life, Mary Dell McKee, who taught home economics. After teaching together in Tillar for one year, the couple accepted positions at Hamburg High School and were married in August 1955, beginning a partnership that would span more than 70 years.

Throughout his distinguished career in education, Shelby touched countless young lives. He served as a Junior High Football Coach, Senior High Boys Basketball Coach, Girls Basketball Coach, Teacher, and MiddleSchool Principal. Whether on the field, in the gymnasium, or the classroom, he believed in hard work, discipline, integrity, and encouraging every student to reach his or her potential. He retired from public education in 1988, after more that three decades of faithful service.

Even while dedicating himself to education, Shelby embraced another lifelong calling. In 1968, following the retirement of his father-in-law, Braxton McKee, he began farming. Working the land became another expression of his commitment to family and community. He farmed until his retirement in 1993, finding great satisfaction in the rhythms of agriculture and the rewards of honest labor.

Shelby was a man known for his quiet strength, steady character, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He believed in keeping his word, lending a helping hand, and leaving things better than he found them. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and the farm, touching generations of students, friends, neighbors, and family members who were blessed to know him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie and Violet Morgan Harrod; two brothers, James Harrod and Jack Harrod and two sisters, Vada Clanton and Dorothy Johnson.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Mary Dell McKee Harrod; two sons, Shelby Reid Harrod, Jr. (Connie), and David Harrod (Peggy), all of Hamburg; two brothers, John Harrod (Glenda), and Roger Harrod (Nell) ; a sister, Ruth Harrod Barnett; his four cherished grandchildren, Christian Harrod (Laura), Alex Harrod (Sydney) and Sarah Harrod, all of Little Rock and Ethan Harrod of South Carolina.  He was the proud great-grandfather of Louise Harrod and Amelia Harrod, with another great-grandson expected in September, who will carry on his name as Shelby Harrod.

The family is deeply grateful for the many friendships, kindnesses, and prayers extended to Shelby throughout his life. His legacy of service, perseverance, kindness, and love for family will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be greatly missed, his example will live on in the lives he touched and in the generations of his family who follow.

A funeral service and celebration of his life will be 2 p.m., Saturday, July 18, 2026 at the First United Methodist Church in Hamburg with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Christian Harrod, Alex Harrod, Ethan Harrod, Austin Fitts, Drew Foote, Scott Borgognoni, Derek Reginelli and Kyle Lassiter.  Memorials may be made to the Hamburg Schools Foundation, 202 E.
