Rev. John L. Peters, 93, of Hamburg, died Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Nightingale at Stonegate Rehabilitation Center in Crossett. Rev. Peters was a native of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee and a resident of the Milo Community outside of Hamburg since 1964. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. A few years after serving his country, Rev. Peters became an Ordained Minister in 1954 and pastored churches in Indiana, Chicago, Illinois and Arkansas. He was a member of the Ross Van Ness Free Will Baptist Church. Rev. Peters enjoyed hunting, fishing, especially catfishing, riding around on his scooter and sitting on his porch watching the cows. The truly giving person that he was, he would grow a garden every year and enjoyed giving it all away.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Barbara Ann Terry Peters in 1994; his second wife, Jeniva Madden Peters in 2004; a daughter, Charyl Terry; a son, Charlie Miller; a grandson, J.T. Peters; a great-granddaughter, Peyton Terry; a son-in-law, Edward Velasquez Terry; his parents, Ira and Gertie Holloway Peters; two sisters, Ethel Norman and Louise Burns and three brothers, Willard Peters, Arthur Peters and Harvil Peters.
He is survived by three sons, Gary Peters and wife, Pam, of Hamburg, Jimmy Miller and wife, Liz, of Little Rock, and Tom Peters of Florida; a sister, Irene Peters of Tennessee; six grandchildren, Stephanie Terry, Staven Terry and wife, Jessie, Toby Terry and wife, Jaci, Miranda Peters, Logan Moore and Dustin Snow; eight great-grandchildren, Chloe Daniel, Sean Daniel, Ethan Daniel, Jaylee Terry, Drake Terry, Adley Terry, Nola Sheffield and Kason Snow and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 10 a.m., Friday, June 16, 2023, in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Watt and Bro. Dale Doss officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery. Pallbearers are Lane Culp, Bruce Culp, D.W. Rice, Pat Allison, Mike Velasquez, and J.R. Tanksley. Honorary pallbearers are John Richardson and James Robert Meeks.
Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
