Jerry Anthony Janes, 80, of Hamburg, passed away Friday, March 25, 2022, at Audrey’s Special Home, outside of Hamburg. Mr. Janes was born October 19, 1941, in Monroe, Louisiana to I.A. “Buddy” and Dorothy Fitzhugh Janes. He was a native of Wilmot and a resident of Hamburg for most of his life. Mr. Janes graduated from Wilmot High School in 1960 and continued his education at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, obtaining a degree in Education. He was involved in several fields of teaching, coaching, and administration in several states including Louisiana, Arizona, and Arkansas during his 37-year career. He was civic and community-minded, being involved with Boy Scouts, baseball and the church youth group. Mr. Janes was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on several church committees, and was a member of the Koinonia Sunday school class. Having lived by the railroad track in Wilmot, he started collecting trains at an early age and loved to show off his collection to family and friends. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Hamburg Lions. Mr. Janes loved spending time with his family and friends and was called ‘Poppa J” by his grandchildren and many school children.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Camille Murphy Janes in 2002; his parents, I.A. “Buddy” and Dorothy Mae Fitzhugh Janes; a brother, Thomas “Tommy” Fitzhugh Janes in 2014 and his mother-in-law, Helen “Baba” Foote in 2021.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Patricia Foote Janes of Hamburg; his children, Jeremy Janes of Rogers, Carey Janes of Bella Vista, Nan Erwin and husband, Keith, of Hamburg and Kyle Barnett and wife, Kamber, of Yukon, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Camille Janes, Claire Janes, Morgan Janes, Murphy Janes, Reid Erwin, Evan Erwin, Kolbie Barnett, and Kylie Barnett.
Graveside services are 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2022, in the Wilmot Cemetery with Rev. Josh Luellen and Rev. Toby Austin officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Dillon Deason, Reid Erwin, Willard Erwin, William Foote, Peyton Gwin, John Martin, Neil Martin, and Jimmy Porter.
