James Matthews, 54, of Hamburg, died Friday, October 13, 2023 at his home. Mr. Matthews was a lifelong resident of Hamburg and a 1986 graduate of Hamburg High School. He worked for Georgia-Pacific Chemical and Ingevity for 28 years. Mr. Matthews was an outdoorsman, an avid bass fisherman, and he enjoyed hunting. Always a great host, he would often fry fish and grill for many “get-togethers” to fellowship with his friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Coleman “Pete” and Eunice Lawson Matthews.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Stephanie Cedotal Matthews of Hamburg; his son, Nolan Matthews of Shreveport, Louisiana; two brothers, Coleman Matthews and wife, Gail, of Hamburg and Donald Matthews of Crossett; three nephews, Logan Matthews, Hayden Matthews and Peyton McNiece and a host of friends.
A private graveside service will be held Tuesday in the Portland Cemetery with Bro. Danny Merriweather officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Hodge, Brian Skender, Gary Lawson, Buster Funkhouser, Clayton Price, and Paul Skender.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
