Obituary

Jackie C. Nelms, 68, of Snyder, died Monday, November 28, 2022, at CHI St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock.  Mr. Nelms was a native and lifelong resident of the Trafalgar Community outside of Snyder and a graduate of Portland High School.  Mr. Nelms, along with his father and five brothers, had an important role within the Nelms Brothers Logging Company, where he worked for over 30 years.  He was a hard worker and could do anything in the logging industry, from running a chainsaw to being a Loader Operator.  Mr. Nelms was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church.  An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the Mallard Drop-In Hunting Club.  Although he enjoyed spending time with his family and going out to eat, his passion was cooking, especially homemade chicken and dressing and biscuits, and feeding big crowds.  A true family man, he had an open door for anyone and truly enjoyed having his children’s friends over.  He loved all of his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Cecil and Emma Florence Streeter Nelms; four brothers, A.B. Nelms, Cecil Nelms, Leo Nelms, and John Curtis Nelms; four nephews, Billy Dewayne Nelms, Terry Nelms, Benji Nelms and Walter King; a niece, Emily Nelms and a great-niece, Lola Brooke Culpepper.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathy Richards Nelms of Snyder; three sons, Ray Nelms of Monticello, John Daniel Nelms of Snyder and Mart Nelms and wife, Gina, of Hamburg; two daughters, Laken Wentworth and husband, Taylor, and Kimberly Nelms, all of Snyder; a brother, Frankie Nelms and wife, Brenda, of Crossett; three sisters, Betty Sue Shirley of Vaiden, Mississippi, Marcelle Buckner and husband, Jerry, and Kathy Greenwood and husband, Terry, all of Hamburg; 12 grandchildren, Austina Byrd and husband, Joey, Tiara Cash and husband, J.T., Tyler Nelms, Mallory Nelms, Avery Nelms, Ethan Nelms, Dakota Womack, Braxton Winstead, Timber Wentworth, Pariz Mondragon, Daylin Norrell, and Daisy Newton; four great-grandchildren, Braylee Jo Byrd, Kenner Byrd, Jesse Ray Cash and a baby girl due in February.

Graveside services are 2 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2022, in the Trafalgar Cemetery with Bro.  Mike Griffith officiating.  Honorary pallbearers are Tyler Nelms, Braxton Winstead, Ethan Nelms, Randy Tomerlin, Nick Chenos, Bobby Wright, Ricky Nelms, Billy Streeter, Paul Hollis, Bo Lowden, George Barfield, Beme Moseby, Kevin Barfield, Taylor Wentworth, J.T. Cash, Joey Byrd, and Jim Barfield.  Memorials may be made to the Arkansas Heart Hospital Foundation, 1701 S. Shackelford Street, Little Rock, AR 72211, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105.
