Harold Hugh "Sugar" Murphy Obituary

Harold Hugh “Sugar” Murphy, 88, of West Monroe, Louisiana, died Saturday, April 20, 2024, at his residence. Mr. Murphy was born and raised in Hamburg and had been a resident of West Monroe for over 35 years. He was a second-generation Logger and later worked on small engines. He helped raise his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was affectionately known as Papaw to them and many others. Mr. Murphy was known for his homemade chocolate pies. He enjoyed running dogs, hunting, and telling stories, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Shirley Stanley Murphy in 2021; a daughter, Deborah Faye Murphy Burns; two great-grandsons, Dakota Mason Martin and William Buck Murphy; a daughter-in-law, Suzy Murphy; his parents, Hugh “Buck” and Feddie Amos Murphy; four brothers, W.E. “Hoss” Murphy, James Edward “Dick” Murphy, Billy Faye Murphy and Robert Dennis Murphy; a sister, Bernice Murphy Cunningham, and four sisters-in-law, Glenda Murphy, Linda Murphy, Joyce Murphy and Betty Barnes Murphy.

He is survived by three sons, Stanley “Butch” Murphy, Jerry “Buddy” Murphy and wife, Shirley, and James Dennis Murphy and wife, Cindy, all of Hamburg; two daughters, Rita King and husband, Jamie, of Columbia, Louisiana and Terra Matthews and husband, Rusty, of Farmerville, Louisiana; three brothers, Ed Murphy of Hamburg, Jerry Murphy of Albany, Georgia and Doyle Murphy and wife, Beverly, of Bastrop, Louisiana; a brother-in-law, Robbie Cunningham of Hamburg; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2024, in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Josh Luellen officiating. Burial will be in the Dailey Cemetery. Pallbearers are Frankie White, James Murphy, Riley Matthews, Kayden Martin, Tyler Tanksley, and Jeremy Murphy. Honorary pallbearers are Johnny William Pierce, J.R. Tanksley, and Skylar Murphy. Memorials may be made to St. Jude, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
