Gwen Mary Popp Newcome, 56, of Portland, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at the Ochsner LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, as the result of an automobile accident. Mrs. Newcome was born January 9, 1969 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Harold and Valeria Grebinoski Popp. Her early years were spent in the Rice/Sartell, Minnesota area and in 1978, when she was nine years old, her family moved everyone to Orange City, Florida. Mrs. Newcome married John Newcome in Deland, Florida in 1997 and in 2001, they moved to Portland. She had been employed at a few businesses in and around Portland, most recently working for Citizens Bank in Portland for many years before she retired in 2024. Mrs. Newcome was a firm believer in God and a strong follower in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church and was currently a member of the Community Bible Study in Greenville, Mississippi, where she had also taught bible classes.
Mrs. Newcome and her husband were very proud of their boys, loved going to their sporting events and were avid Mississippi State supporters and attended many ballgames. Her passions included anything to do with cooking! She loved trying new recipes, had many subscriptions to cooking/food magazines, collected hardcover cookbooks and her kitchen television was always on the food channel. She enjoyed fixing up their historic home, was an avid reader, loved fashion, mini vacations at the family lake house, family vacations to Daytona Beach, Florida, preparing crawfish boil get-togethers, making dinner every Sunday evening for family members & friends and having family from out of state visit her and her husband. She loved their pets, a dog, Chico and two cats, Lilly and Marge.
Mrs. Newcome adored and cherished her family. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sibling, and friend. Mrs. Newcome will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her and will be in our hearts forever. May you rest in peace.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Valeria Grebinoski Popp; a brother, Gale Popp and her mother-in-law, Patricia Swinney Newcome.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, John Newcome of Portland; two sons, Riley Dean Newcome of Monticello and Nicholas Popp Newcome of Big Sky, Montana; her father, Harold Popp of Daytona Beach, Florida; two sisters, Gretchen Thompson (Dave) of Minnesota/Florida and Gloria Armstrong (Ken) of Florida; three brothers, Greg Popp (Vicki) of Tennessee, Gerald Popp (Anne) of Florida and Geoff Popp (Jolen) of Texas/Georgia and her father-in-law, Benton Newcome of Portland.
