Gladys Louella Rice Martin, 80, of Hamburg, died Friday, October 11, 2024, at Audrey's Special Home. Mrs. Martin was a lifelong resident of Hamburg and Ashley County, a 1961 graduate of Hamburg High School and a faithful member of the Martinville Baptist Church. She was known to be a hard worker and was a seamstress for the Hamburg Shirt Factory for 15 years until she began managing and maintaining her rental properties for over 45 years. Mrs. Martin enjoyed cooking and would feed you if you were hungry or not. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Carl "Butch" Martin in 2019; a son, Charles "Bush Hog" Martin in 2011; a great-grandson, Logan Carpenter and a son-in-law, Joe Fred Yates, both earlier this year; her parents, Cecil Legett and Abbie Nora Stanley Rice; six siblings, Charles Fay Rice, Tracey L. Rice, Julia Ann Jenkins, Thomas Madison Rice, Murice Verlee Jenkins and Dixie Nell Bays.
She is survived by her son, Frankie Martin and wife, Christie; her daughter, Cindy Yates, all of Hamburg; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Martin of Hampton; a sister, Lexie Mae Estelle of Hamburg; eight grandchildren, Nikki Powers and husband, Jason, C.J. McGilton and wife, Destiny, Clayton McGilton, Jennifer Yates, Dakota Martin and wife, Amy, Justin Martin and wife, Ashton, Ryan Carpenter and wife, Danna and Brandon Carpenter and fiancé, Carly; 18 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild on the way and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Sunday, October 13, 2024, in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Clayton Hales officiating. Burial will be in the Crossroads Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dakota Martin, Justin Martin, C.J. McGilton, Clayton McGilton, Brandon Carpenter and Ryan Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers are George "Mike" Bates and Lee Troy Ware. Visitation will be 6 - 8 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
