Faye Atkins Obituary

Faye Atkins, 93, of Hamburg, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2020, in Little Rock.  A resident of Hamburg for most of her life, she was born on June 19, 1926 in Bonita, Louisiana to Floyd and Lillibet “Jackie” Hill Newsom.  She graduated in 1943 from Bonita High School, where she was a proud member of the 1941 Louisiana State Championship Softball team.  After graduation, she went to work as a payroll clerk at Selman Airfield to do her part during WWII.  She moved to Hamburg in 1947, where she met and married James Roy “Jim” Atkins.  Their marriage was cut short by a tragic accident in July of 1955, leaving her a widow shortly before their second child was born.   Mrs. Faye was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg, where she sang in the choir, worked in the nursery, and served as Sunday School Secretary.  She raised her children in the church she loved and taught them to love the Lord. Mrs. Faye enjoyed playing bridge with her friends from her neighborhood, Razorback basketball, fried chicken, and any kind of dessert. There was never a pie or cake that went unnoticed by Aunt Faye, one member of the family fondly noted.  She loved her family wholeheartedly and never missed an opportunity to gather with them.  A beloved mother and grandmother, she was so proud of her children and grandchildren and loved telling anyone who would listen about their accomplishments.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Roy Atkins in 1955; father, Floyd Newsom, her mother, Jackie Hill Newsom Carr and her twin sister, Mary Raye Newsom Boone.

She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Nutter and husband, David; her son, Jim Atkins and wife, Lisa; her sister, Peggy Holland all of Hamburg; two granddaughters, Kristin Nutter of Hamburg and Allyson Tullos and husband, Steven, of Lake Village; a grandson, Dr. James Atkins, and wife, Natalie, of Monticello; two great-grandchildren, Jayden Tullos and Will Atkins, a host of nieces and nephews and many cherished friends she counted as family.

Graveside services are 3 p.m., Friday, March 27, 2020 in the Promise Land Cemetery with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating.  Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands Food Pantry, 816 Pine Ridge Drive, Hamburg, Arkansas 71646.
