Eunice Matthews, 71, of Hamburg, died Sunday, January 2, 2022, at her residence. Mrs. Matthews was a native of Kilbourne, Louisiana, a resident of Hamburg for the past 50 years and she attended Eudora High School. Mrs. Matthews worked at the Hamburg Shirt Factory for over 15 years and the Hamburg School District Cafeteria for over 10 years, where every child called her “Nanny”. She enjoyed staying busy outside working in her yard was a seamstress in her own home for many years. Mrs. Matthews had a big heart and loved her grandsons and great-grandbabies. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Coleman “Pete” Matthews in 2014; her parents, Leroy and Jewel Elizabeth Hamilton Lawson; a daughter-in-law, Belinda Lephiew Matthews and her maternal grandmother, Leona Hamilton.
She is survived by three sons, Coleman Matthews and wife, Gail, James Matthews and wife, Stephanie, all of Hamburg and Donald Matthews of Crossett; a brother, Robert Lawson and wife, June, of Woodlawn; four grandsons, Peyton McNiece and wife, Hali, Nolan Matthews, Logan Matthews and Hayden Matthews and two great-grandchildren, Kyle McNiece and Olivia McNiece.
Graveside services are 10 a.m., Thursday, January 6, 2022, in the Portland Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Peyton McNiece, Nolan Matthews, Logan Matthews, Hayden Matthews, Buster Funkhouser and Johnny Hodge.
Visitation will be 6 – 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
