Chester Joe “C.J.” Courtney, 86, of Dermott, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020, at the Lake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center. Mr. Courtney was born on August 30, 1934, in Dermott. He graduated from Dermott High School in 1952 and received his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s of Business Administration Degree from the University of Mississippi, in Oxford, Mississippi, in 1961. Mr. Courtney was a Certified Public Accountant, practicing in Dermott and Hamburg for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, stationed in Libya, a past President and member of the Dermott School Board, Dermott Lions Club, Dermott Rotary Club, and the Chicot County Republican Party for many years. He was a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Church. Mr. Courtney was a lifelong and diehard fan of the Ole Miss Rebels. He enjoyed many activities, including dancing, golf, hunting, and fishing with his family, friends, and pets.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Elease Chandler Courtney in 2019; his parents, Chester B. & Mary Jo Kirby Courtney, and a brother, Billy Gene Courtney.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Laura Courtney and Shawn Ply and husband, Mark, all of Dermott; his sons, Charles Haynes and wife ShAila of East End and David Haynes and wife, Evelynn of Crossett; 9 grandchildren, Amanda Golda of Durango, Colorado, Stephanie Weems of Dermott, Michael Head of Dermott, Allison Lopez of Portland, Oregon, Courtney Livingston of Redfield, Rebecca Cook and Joey Haynes, both of East End, Mark Haynes of Newnan, Georgia and Eric Haynes of Crossett and 21 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, October 10, 2020, in the Dermott Cemetery with Robert Ballard officiating. Memorials may be made to the Dermott Cemetery, PO Box 324, Dermott, AR 71638.
