Mary Virginia Currie

Mary Virginia Currie, 75, of Wilmot, the daughter of the late John Bellfield Currie and Mary Virginia deYampert Currie, died Saturday, October 7, 2023. She was preceded in death by an older brother, John Bellfield Currie, Jr. and is survived by her sister-in-law, Bland Currie of Wilmot; her twin sister, Martha Currie Green of Covington, Louisiana; her younger brother, William Jackson Currie, Sr. of Wilmot; four nieces, three nephews, and some great-nieces and nephews.

Mary Currie grew up in Wilmot. She graduated from Chatham Hall in Chatham, Virginia, and Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and taught school for two years. She then attended the University of Arkansas Law School in Fayetteville. After graduating, she clerked for Federal Judge Paul X. Williams in Fort Smith. When Judge Williams assumed senior status, she moved to New York to work in the legal department at MetLife Insurance Company, where she worked for about ten years. When her mother became very ill, she returned to Wilmot to care for her mother, and later her father, and remained there for the rest of her life.

Mary was an academic, an avid reader, a lover of nature and animals, and was devoted to her community. She sought the good in others, was curious, kind, and generous. She had a great sense of humor, loved a good joke, and had tremendous style. She will be missed by all who knew her.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, October 13, 2023, in the Wilmot Cemetery with The Reverend Dawnell Stodghill officiating. The family will gather in the cemetery at 3:30 p.m. to visit with friends of Mary and her family.
