James Thompson, 63, of Hamburg, died Friday, March 1, 2024, at Baptist Health Medical Center Drew County in Monticello. Mr. Thompson was a lifelong resident of Hamburg and a 1979 graduate of Hamburg High School. He began working in highway construction in 1979, for his father at R. Thompson, Inc. and later worked alongside his brother and sons until his retirement in 2019. He was an ordained Minister having pastored North Main Baptist Church for over five years, and was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Sherry Jackson Thompson in 2022; his parents, Robby and Noma Dean Thompson and his mother-in-law, Sylvia Hackett Pierce.
He is survived by two sons, Tyler Thompson and wife, Mallori, and Hunter Thompson and wife, Punky; a brother, Gene Thompson and wife, Pat, all of Hamburg; his sister-in-law, Stephanie Jackson and husband, B.J., of Monticello; two nieces and a nephew; his special neighbor and friends, Linda Hickman, Ann Brooks, Carmen Smith, Dee Dee Smith and Joyce and Rick McKelvey.
Funeral services are 10 a.m., Monday, March 4, 2024 in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bodie Spicer officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Shane Smith, Caleb Coody, Boots Stanley, Matthew Smith, Jake Adams, John Burch, Bert Jackson and Aaron Nelms. Honorary pallbearers are Frankie Martin, Mike George, Bruce Towe, Johnny Pierce, Mike Sanderlin, Ricky Hawkins, Bobby Martin, Tim Smith, Steve Brooks and Dakota Martin. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
