Evelyn “Sue” Cossey, 89, of Parkdale, died Thursday, March 21, 2024, at the Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center in Ozark. Mrs. Cossey was a native of Parkdale and a resident of Parkdale for most of her life, a resident of Ozark for the past month, a former resident of Fountain Hill for eight years. She was a substitute teacher and cafeteria worker for many years and was affectionately and respectfully called “Mrs. Sue” by all the students she had. Mrs. Cossey was best known for her cooking abilities, especially her cathead biscuits. She served many meals and fed many souls. Mrs. Cossey was a member of the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid lifelong learner, and she enjoyed reading two devotional books daily and doing Word Search and Sudoku puzzles. Mrs. Cossey also enjoyed working in her vegetable garden, planting flowers, sewing clothes, quilts and crafts, cake decorating, hay baling, quail farming, and making Christmas stockings for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ray Cossey in 2013; a son, Cecil Lamar Cossey in 2010; a granddaughter, Marci Rankin in 2004; a grandson, Anthony “Sparky” Zaunbrecher in 2021; her parents, Thomas and Rebecca Pope Martin; five brothers, Frank Martin, Wilburn Martin, Charlie Martin, Buck Martin and Earl Martin; three sisters, Marie Roark, Lucille Askew and Pearl Martin.
She is survived by a son, Elbert Ray Cossey of Crossett; four daughters, Linda Barrett and husband, Johnnie, of Hot Springs, Dot Zaunbrecher of Benton, Alice Albright and husband, Jeff, of Ozark and Mary Jane Johnston and husband, Chris, of Fountain Hill; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Cossey of Fountain Hill; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Josh Luellen officiating. Burial will be in the Bell Cemetery. Pallbearers are Cecil Ray Cossey, Keith Barrett, Jeffrey Albright, Josh Cossey, Vic Barrett, Matthew Rankin, John Thomas Zaunbrecher, Tyler Hickman and Ethan Zaunbrecher. Honorary pallbearers are Johnnie Barrett, Jeff Albright, Chris Johnston and Lee Thornhill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hamburg High School Honors Scholarship Fund, PO Box 30, Hamburg, AR 71646.
Visitation will be 1 - 2 p.m., Sunday at the church.
